Update, 15th June, 2021: After being produced in the Colombo High Court, the captain was released on a $10,000 personal bond. Also, a travel ban has been imposed on the captain of the sunken box-ship.
Sri Lankan authorities have arrested the Russian captain of MV X-Press Pearl, Tyutkalo Vitaly.
After being arrested by the Sri Lankan authorities, the captain was sent for a hearing in a Sri Lankan court. The judgements of which are awaited.
The island nation is seeking an ‘interim claim’ of $40 million, for the damages caused by the ill-fated container-vessel, which burned for almost 13 days, before sinking off the Port of Colombo.
Sri Lanka’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has previously questioned the vessel’s Chief Engineer and Second Engineer about their knowledge of the events leading up to the disaster as well.
