Watch: Seafarer Killed In Containership Fire Off Philippines

A fatal fire was reported onboard MV General Romula off the Philippines on Sunday, after a pipe allegedly exploded onboard the vessel. The Philippine Coast Guard responded to the incident shortly.

The first was reported onboard the 1997-built vessel which housed 20 crew members, on 17th April, off of Talisay City in the province of Cebu.

It has been reported that three crew members have sustained injuries and one has deceased unfortunately. The body of the late seafarer was reportedly still onboard the vessel, with rescuers unable to retrieve them due to the magnitude of the fire.


“Coast Guard Sub-Station (CGSS) Talisay received information that M/V General Romulo, a container ship and domestic vessel, was caught on fire while anchored at the vicinity waters off Talisay City. Immediately, personnel of CGSS Talisay and Talisay City Bantay Dagat responded to the incident and conducted medical evacuation,” said the coast guard in a statement.

The cause of the incident was reported to be an explosion and the Philippines Coast Guard is “still identifying the particular pipe that exploded,” according to an update.

As of Sunday, the firefighting was still going on.
