After being reported of the VLCC ship New Diamond fire, the Indian and Srilankan authorities are conducting a joint operation to curb the fire that erupted on the vessel on 3rd September, 2020.

According to the Sri Lankan Navy, 22 crew members have been rescued from the burning tanker, but one seafarer allegedly of filipino nationality has been reported dead in the explosion.

The fire erupted in the 1700 tonnes of diesel which the ship is carrying, with 270,000 tonnes of crude oil cargo being safe from the fire.

No oil spill has been reported from the as vessel yet, but the Sri Lankan authorities are extremely worried, as the ship is much larger than MV Wakashio (the ship which caused oil-spill in Mauritius), and has 70 times more oil than the Wakashio carried!
