Indian Third Officer Found Hanging In Tanker’s Thruster Room

The third officer onboard Shandong Zihe, an oil tanker, was found hanging in the bow thruster room of the vessel on 1st October, while the Hong Kong-flagged vessel was on its way from the ports of Gulf of Guinea to Gibralter Strait’s Banco Del Hoyo Anchorage W.

It is reported that the Indian third officer, who was aged just 24, did not show up to replace the CO for dinner. After which, the general alarm of the 40,059 DWT vessel was sounded, and the crew mustered for his search.

Later at around 19:00 UTC, he was found hanging in the bow thruster room. After which, Cardiac Resuscitation CPR was applied and he was transferred to the infirmary, as he was still alive. At about 20:47 UTC, the man was declared dead by Telemedical Maritime Assistance Service (TMAS), which was immediately called after the body of the seafarer was found.

After this incident, which is suspected of being a suicide, the body of third officer was taken to a freezer, while the vessel continued its voyage to the Europa Point Gibraltar, where it arrived on 3rd October, and remained anchored in the same position as of the evening of 4th October, 2021.

The man boarded the tanker during the end of August, from Lome in Togo.
