A spokesperson for the city of Rotterdam noted that the mid-section of Koningshavenbrug, which is popularly known to locals as De Hef, will be removed this summer to make way for the yacht with 40-metre (131 feet) masts, but didn’t comment on who owns the ship.

Rijnmond, which is a Rotterdam broadcaster, noted that Jeff Bezos is the owner of the yacht. Officials at yacht builder Oceanco did not prefer to give response to requests for comment. Representatives for Jeff Bezos too, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Known as Y721 during construction, the ship will be 127 meters (139 yards) in length, which will be the largest sailing yacht in the world, according to figures published by Boat International. It is expected to launch in 2022.

The city added that it considered its duty carefully to care for the bridge and the economic interests created by the project before ‘ultimately deciding to vote in favor of this request’.

Koningshavenbrug dates back to 1878, and was rebuilt after German bombings during the second world war damaged the bridge. De Hef was further renovated in 2017, and officials at the council promised that the bridge would never be dismantled again.

The ship builder will cover all the undisclosed costs for the bridge operation, according to the city. It can rightly be assumed that some of the costs incurred can potentially be passed on to the 57 year-old founder of tech-giant Amazon.com, Inc. Mr. Bezos, who is the second-richest individual in the world with a net worth of approximately $175.8 billion, as per the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

Superyacht sales have made a record surge in 2021, where it doubled the sales figures of 2019, rising by 77% from 2020 too, thanks to the rising levels of personal wealth off current millionaires / billionaires. Notably, Burgess, a boat building company reported at-least 2 billion euros in superyacht sales in 2021, according to a report from VesselsValue.
